[dropcap]O[/dropcap]n 20 April 2017, Guardian Council announced a list of 6 approved candidates. The list is contains incumbent president Hassan Rouhani, Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri, Astan Quds Razavi chairman Ebrahim Raisi, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Mostafa Mir-Salim and Mostafa Hashemitaba. Presidential elections are scheduled to be held in Iran on 19 May 2017. It will be the twelfth presidential election in Iran. Iran is a major player in the Middle East. Because of its nuclear program and support for the Shia-led governments in Iraq and Syria, world powers see Tehran both as part of the problem and the solution to the region’s woes.
